How key fobs and access cards work in Parakey

With Parakey, you can use your phone as a key and add key fobs or access cards. Here is how they work together.

Key fob or access card

A key fob and an access card work in the same way. Their shape differs, but both use MIFARE DESFire EV2 or EV3, which Parakey has chosen for extra high security.

The person using the key fob does not need a phone to unlock. An administrator registers the key fob in the Parakey app on an Android phone, then selects which locks it can open in the web portal. Support for programming and managing key fobs on iOS is under development.

Which products support key fobs and access cards?

Parakey Door Handle and Parakey Cylinder are the first products to support key fobs and access cards. Key fob support for Parakey Slim is planned but is not currently available.

Your phone transfers changes and logs in the background

Parakey Cylinder and Parakey Door Handle work offline. Each time someone unlocks with their phone, key fob access logs are collected automatically in the background, without the user having to do anything extra.

💡 Whenever a user unlocks with their phone, changes to key fob access rights are automatically transferred to that lock in the background. All users with mobile access help with this, on both Android and iPhone. A change takes effect once it has reached the lock.

Do I need to use a phone every time I unlock with a key fob?

No. Once the key fob’s access rights are stored in the lock, you can unlock with the key fob without using a phone.

If a lock is used almost exclusively with key fobs, an administrator can collect pending access logs using Collect logs in the app.
