The key fob or access card is not working

If a key fob cannot open a door, this may be due to its access rights, a change that has not yet reached the lock, or the lock’s log memory being full. Here is how to find the cause.

If you use the key fob

  1. Hold the key fob against the reader on Parakey Door Handle or Parakey Cylinder itself.

  2. Check that you are using the key fob at a door it has access to. If it does not have access, the lock makes a sound and lights up red.

  3. Contact the person responsible for the site if the lock does not open.

An NFC sticker by the door is used with your phone and cannot read your key fob.

If you administer the site

Check the lock and key fob

Check that the lock is a Parakey Cylinder or Parakey Door Handle with software that supports key fobs. The key fob or access card needs to use MIFARE DESFire EV2 or EV3 technology.

Check registration and access rights

Open Keys → Key fobs and access cards in the web portal. Check that the key fob is registered at the correct site and has access to the relevant lock.

If the key fob has previously been permanently deleted in the web portal, it cannot be registered again.

Check that the change has reached the lock

Open the key fob in the web portal and see which changes to its access rights have been transferred to the relevant lock.

💡 Whenever a user unlocks with their phone, changes to key fob access rights are automatically transferred to that lock in the background. All users with mobile access help with this, on both Android and iPhone. A change takes effect once it has reached the lock.

Collect logs if the key fob has stopped working

If the key fob worked before but suddenly stops working, the lock’s log memory may be full. An administrator can use Collect logs in the app while at the lock, then try the key fob again.

A missing or incorrect time in the lock can also prevent unlocking with a key fob. A mobile unlock can help the lock update its time.

If you cannot register the key fob

Check that you are using Android with NFC, have administrator permissions for the correct site, and that the subscription has available capacity. A key fob can be registered at one site at a time. Support for programming and managing key fobs on iOS is under development.

If the problem persists

Contact Parakey and provide the site, lock, time, the key fob’s name or UID, and what you have already tried. Please also describe the light indicator and any sounds, and whether unlocking with a phone works.
